2012-08-01 “Boys Night Out”

This past weekend I went to the trailer with Lucas (who is now 5) for “boys night out”.  That ritual for us starts at the grocery store where we get that one treat reserved for special occasions…a lunchable.  But this time Lucas looked at them and decided that he really only wanted the candy that came in the more expensive ones so it wasn’t worth buying.  Then we walked through the candy aisle and although he did stop and look a couple of times, he decided candy wasn’t the snack he was looking for either.  To make a long story short, a bag of Doritos, some grapes and a couple of kinder eggs for good measure and we were on our way.

This has been a big year for Lucas.  He got brave enough to put his head under water in the pool.  He has taught himself to swim across the pool and he has learned how to get on his bike and get it going on his own.  He’s growing up.  It always amazes me how intuitive Lucas is.  Although he and his younger brother have their moments, Lucas always comes running if Graham cries and if Graham is doing something potentially dangerous, Lucas is there to steer him from harm.

After our second bike ride on Saturday night it was starting to get dark, but the moon was shining bright over the lake.  And it was then Lucas and I had a conversation that will stay with me for a long time…

“Papa, do you want to go down to the beach?”

“Sure I do, Lucas.  It’s boys night out.”

“I love you, Papa.”

“I love you too, Lucas.”

“I hope you don’t never die until I’m an adult.”

“I probably won’t, Lucas.  Do you want to wear shoes or go barefoot?”

“What do you want to do, Papa?”

“I want to do what you want to do, Lucas.”

“Two bodies, one soul…right Papa?”

“Right, Lucas.”

In anyone’s life there are moments worth capturing, like the Jim Croce song that says “if I could save time in a bottle…”

I love you, Lucas.
