Vern Brown

A photo of Vern Brown

Following a life of sheer determination and hard work, Vern Brown passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2022.  He will be remembered with great fondness by his wife Cathy (Witfield) Brown, his children Debbie Pinsonneault, Brenda McNear (late Mike), Jim & Bobbi Brown, Shelley Brown (Chuck Howard) and Bobby Brown (Kelly Swanson), his grandchildren Sarah, Jason, Jodi & Calvin, Josh, Jacob, Jesse, Jim & Consuela, Ella, Bowynn and MacKenzie and by his great-grandchildren Gracie, Brody and Brayden.

A long-time resident of Ridgetown, Vern’s early influencers in life were his Mother Helen (McCullough) and his “Poppy” Clayt Smith.  He is survived by his brother Jim but was predeceased by his sisters Marilyn and Layla as well as his brothers Tom, Bob and Bill.

As a young man, Vern developed a love of horses.  He excelled in training and showing horses at many country fairs and earned the distinction of Best In Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.  It was just recently because of his declining health that the horses he loved and cared for so much were rehomed.

For over 62 years Vern served Ridgetown and surrounding areas with Great haircuts.  His barbering skills were impeccable and his shop became more than a place to work; it became a Ridgetown landmark where friends would gather to debate the topics of the day and enjoy a few laughs.  That comradery was a driving force in Vern’s determination to keep going.  Even in the last few days there was a note in the door with his phone number for folks to call if they were in need of a cut.  One of the greatest things you can do in life is to leave an impression on a future generation and Vern did that.  He has been mentoring his grandson to become a barber with the hope of taking over the family business.

Verns wishes for this stage of his life were uncomplicated.  His family will remember him in their own way and when the weather permits, his urn will be buried in Morpeth Cemetery.  Should you wish to honour him with a memorial donation, please consider a charity of your choice.

Condolences

  • MY CONDOLENCES TO YOU VERN BROWN AND YOUR FAMILY.
  • Cathy and family; I am so sorry to hear about Vern. As my father used to say, a barber shop is more than just a place to give somebody a haircut. What you can't tell your wife, you can always tell your barber. A therapy session for the price of a haircut. The best deal in town. After he retired he always looked forward to coming back to town to fill in for Vern from time to time and always spoke very highly of him. After reading all the condolences it tells everybody all they need to know. A true Ridgetown icon. I'm sure the customers up there will be lining up for a trim.

  • Dear Cathy and Bobby, I'm very sorry to hear of Verns passing. I lost my husband in January 31. 2019. My grandma Muriel passed January 2011. She was Bobby s ( grandma). Vern and my grandpa Ralph or " R.B. " shared the passion of hackney Ponies. Many of our horses came from Ridgetown . I remember many meals with Sam from the dinner. I'm sorry I never visited. May be some day we could have a coffee. And share the lose of our husband's. In my thoughts and prayers always. Hugs to you Cathy and to Bobby.

  • Dear Deb, Brenda, Shelly and Jim. My deepest condolences to you and your families. I've been reading so many wonderful things about your dad from everyone who knew him. I have fond memories of him when we were kids, some funny ones too at Nanny's old house on Stanley St. in Blenheim. Vern was always a soft spoken gentle person. I remember how he loved animals especially horses. When I was about 8 and he about 16 he asked me to help train a little grey Shetland pony named Danny. He needed someone small to ride him. Danny wasn't having it and bucked me off every time. I remember life was hard back in those days but simple unlike these days. I could go on and one but will just end by saying I loved him and will miss him. He worked hard and became a pillar of the community. Loved the video! It was very moving. I'm thinking about you all and so sorry for your loss.
    Love and hugs, cousin Donna

I am so sorry to hear about Vern. He sure was a good friend to our brother Bob when he lived in town. I will miss that smile & wave he always gave me when passing the shop or on the street. As you can tell from all the tributes he was really loved & well respected her in town. R.I.P Vern Ridgetown will really miss you.
  • To all of Vern's family so sorry to hear of his passing. I sure will miss waving and having words with him everyday as I passed his shop to get the mail. May his memories bring you lots of laughter and love. He sure was one of a kind. Hugs to all! Brenda Sheeler
