Vern Brown

A photo of Vern Brown

Following a life of sheer determination and hard work, Vern Brown passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2022.  He will be remembered with great fondness by his wife Cathy (Witfield) Brown, his children Debbie Pinsonneault, Brenda McNear (late Mike), Jim & Bobbi Brown, Shelley Brown (Chuck Howard) and Bobby Brown (Kelly Swanson), his grandchildren Sarah, Jason, Jodi & Calvin, Josh, Jacob, Jesse, Jim & Consuela, Ella, Bowynn and MacKenzie and by his great-grandchildren Gracie, Brody and Brayden.

A long-time resident of Ridgetown, Vern’s early influencers in life were his Mother Helen (McCullough) and his “Poppy” Clayt Smith.  He is survived by his brother Jim but was predeceased by his sisters Marilyn and Layla as well as his brothers Tom, Bob and Bill.

As a young man, Vern developed a love of horses.  He excelled in training and showing horses at many country fairs and earned the distinction of Best In Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.  It was just recently because of his declining health that the horses he loved and cared for so much were rehomed.

For over 62 years Vern served Ridgetown and surrounding areas with Great haircuts.  His barbering skills were impeccable and his shop became more than a place to work; it became a Ridgetown landmark where friends would gather to debate the topics of the day and enjoy a few laughs.  That comradery was a driving force in Vern’s determination to keep going.  Even in the last few days there was a note in the door with his phone number for folks to call if they were in need of a cut.  One of the greatest things you can do in life is to leave an impression on a future generation and Vern did that.  He has been mentoring his grandson to become a barber with the hope of taking over the family business.

Verns wishes for this stage of his life were uncomplicated.  His family will remember him in their own way and when the weather permits, his urn will be buried in Morpeth Cemetery.  Should you wish to honour him with a memorial donation, please consider a charity of your choice.

MY CONDOLENCES TO YOU VERN BROWN AND YOUR FAMILY.

Cathy and family; I am so sorry to hear about Vern. As my father used to say, a barber shop is more than just a place to give somebody a haircut. What you can't tell your wife, you can always tell your barber. A therapy session for the price of a haircut. The best deal in town. After he retired he always looked forward to coming back to town to fill in for Vern from time to time and always spoke very highly of him. After reading all the condolences it tells everybody all they need to know. A true Ridgetown icon. I'm sure the customers up there will be lining up for a trim. Paul Tripp

Dear Cathy and Bobby, I'm very sorry to hear of Verns passing. I lost my husband in January 31. 2019. My grandma Muriel passed January 2011. She was Bobby s ( grandma). Vern and my grandpa Ralph or " R.B. " shared the passion of hackney Ponies. Many of our horses came from Ridgetown . I remember many meals with Sam from the dinner. I'm sorry I never visited. May be some day we could have a coffee. And share the lose of our husband's. In my thoughts and prayers always. Hugs to you Cathy and to Bobby.

Condolences to Vern's Family Prayers are with you all at this difficult time

Dear Deb, Brenda, Shelly and Jim. My deepest condolences to you and your families. I've been reading so many wonderful things about your dad from everyone who knew him. I have fond memories of him when we were kids, some funny ones too at Nanny's old house on Stanley St. in Blenheim. Vern was always a soft spoken gentle person. I remember how he loved animals especially horses. When I was about 8 and he about 16 he asked me to help train a little grey Shetland pony named Danny. He needed someone small to ride him. Danny wasn't having it and bucked me off every time. I remember life was hard back in those days but simple unlike these days. I could go on and one but will just end by saying I loved him and will miss him. He worked hard and became a pillar of the community. Loved the video! It was very moving. I'm thinking about you all and so sorry for your loss. Love and hugs, cousin Donna

With many memory, I wish to send my condolences to the Family.

Dear Brenda and Jodi and the Brown family, We were sorry to hear of the passing of your father and grandfather. I've heard many kind things about him from Brenda. I know he will be deeply missed. Our condolences to the Brown family and friends. Kim and Rob Ladd

Ridgetown and the Community will dearly miss Vern, who touched so many over the course of his life and work here. Not only did we have a good barber, a dedicated horseman and willing volunteer, but we had a special someone, who could listen and talk to us. It was said, Vern was an icon of the 60s and a stranger to his shop might have that thought that; however, to most of us, that just made him all the more special. Yes, there will be changes and maybe things will never be the same, but as others who have gone before, Vern will certainly become part of our history…..and I believe that will be the greatest appreciation we can give him. Thank you Vern.

My condolences. You were an asset to our town. Rest in peace my friend.

Sending our deepest sympathy to Cathy and her family.

Deb, Sending my deepest condolences to you and your family. Your dad will be with you always in your heart. Cathy

Deepest Sympathy to all of the family. Vern was such a great guy. He will be Greatly missed

To the entire Brown family. So sorry to hear about Vern's passing. He was such a wonderful person.

Cathy & family - Please accept our sincere sympathy in the passing of Vern, our thoughts and prayer are with each of you at this very difficult time. May the memories of love shared comfort you now and in the days to come.

I have many fond memories of the "summer brush cut' -- convenient for cottage life and fam work -- followed by the back-to-school trim. While fam wives shopped for groceries on Saturdays, the husbands gathered to complain about the weather or to brag about their field yields. If I sat quietly on the bench, with my mouth shut, I herd a lot of jokes that I was too young to understand. Vern's was less of a barbershop than it was a small-town institution. He has earned his rest.

Shelley. So Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He was a well liked and respected man in Ridgetown and the surrounding area. May the many memories help you at this time of your loss. Pete and Joan Anderson

Brenda and family, please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. RIP Vern

So sorry for your loss, Vern will be missed by many .

Debbie, Brenda, Jim, and Shelly, I am so sorry to hear of your dads passing. I treasure the many memories of him and your family while growing up in Ridgetown. Stopping in at the shop and running across the street to get him a coffee, hanging at the barn with his beloved horses, always a laugh and a grin from Vern whenever I saw him. Take comfort knowing he is at peace and in the loving memories you have. ❤️ Kandace and Eric

Brenda & family - my sincere condolences on the passing of your dad. What a beautiful write up and video of his life. Cherish all those memories.

Cathy & Family Our deepest condolences to the Brown Family. Vern always took the time to visit when he picked up hay for the horses. May fond memories comfort you at this difficult time.

On behalf of Mary Robinson and her family, please accept our condolences on the passing of Vern. We all have pleasant memories of our time in Vern’s Barbershop 💈 growing up.

My heart was saddened and heavy upon hearing of this loss. My wife & I, and soon after, my Father-In-Law came to the beautiful town of Ridgetown as “Outsiders” about 20 years ago. I was happy to find a Barber in town, and started to get to know Vern. It didn’t take long to realize the world couldn’t ask for a kinder gentler caring man, and is now a lesser place without him. Although I was not a close friend, he welcomed me with open arms, and was a delight to talk with, when in need of his talents. He always cared of the well being of others, and offered me personal advice when I discovered I was dealing with Cancer. I am sorry to the family for his loss, and cannot express words of comfort, other than the peaceful nature that he left us, and the memories that will remain with us all. May we all remember him fondly, as I know I will, every time I pass his shop. Be at peace Vern, and thank you for touching my life.

Our sincerest sympathy during this time of great loss. All of the employees at the John Aarts Group and Concrete Forming 1980 send their heartfelt sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Heartfelt condolences to the family ,he sure will be missed , loved that you could pop in and have a chat . I’m sure sure he’s now an Angel to watch over his legacy . Rest In Peace , hugzzzzz

Vern was such a special sole of a man, my heart strings tug at this moment for the whole town ……… my son went to get his hair cut at age 7 or 8 there and when he was all done he came to me and said “Mommy Vern is a very nice man, can he cut my hair all the time?”. He was quiet and kind, humble and the passion for his work and his community was a big part of who he was. My condolences to the whole Brown family for your loss in my eyes he was a “legend”. ❤️

Cathy (and the Entire Brown Family), I was so sorry to hear about Vern. His shop was next door to my mom's for many years, and I would often see him when I was visiting her. He cut our son's hair for the first time (25 years ago) and the picture remains in our album as a fond memory. I suspect that this is the case for many Ridgetown residents. Even after mom retired, I would always wave and stop in to say hello. A visit to mom's store and Ridgetown almost always included a visit with Vern. Thinking of all of you as you honour his memory. jen
