Michael Allen McNear, forever loved husband of Brenda (Brown) McNear and father of Jodi Hartford (Calvin) passed away peacefully on Sunday April 24, 2016. Mike was born on November 18, 1957; the year that Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings was recognized as being the Most Valuable Player in the NHL and the Milwaukee Braves won the 1957 World Series.  He lived his life being a sports fan, especially of hockey and baseball in both the major leagues and locally as he played on many teams over the years and he was a huge fan of the Blenheim Blades.

Mike was a great guy. Not only was he a loving husband and an outstanding father, but he was an awesome son to his late parents Buck & Dorisann McNear and an awesome brother to Mark McNear (Debbie Wardell), Mickey McNear and the late Matthew McNear.  He will be remembered as a great son in law by Loretta Brown and Vern & Cathy Brown, a great brother in law by Deb Pinsonneault (Dan Ball), Shelley Brown (Chuck Howard), Jim Brown (Bobbi) and Bob Brown (Kit).  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mike was a long time employee of Dajcor Aluminum in Chatham where he was able to share his dry sense of humor and opinions on what mattered most in life (sports) for over forty years. In his spare time he enjoyed sitting in his garage with friends, discussing whether the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago Blackhawks were worthy of their 2015 titles, listening to the radio and cracking the top off a cold beer.  He enjoyed destinations far and wide travelled with friends, always appreciating their good company and bad jokes.  Through his journey with cancer, Mike always remained positive and treasured the time he was able to share with Brenda, Jodi & Calvin, family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to the Blenheim Community Funeral Home on Wednesday April 27, 2016 where visitation will be held from 1 – 4 & 6 – 9 p.m. Cremation will follow.  A public graveside service for Mike will be held at Evergreen Cemetery the following Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.  Friends are welcome to gather at the Legion Chapel at Evergreen Cemetery and at the Blenheim Legion following the service for lunch.

Given Mike’s admiration for the Blenheim Blades, it was his wish that friends wishing to remember him with a memorial donation would consider them or another charity of your choice.

  • While going through hometown obituaries, I saw Vern Brown’s, and noticed his son-in-law Mike! Being the same age and attending Ridgetown District High School, Mike and I competed against each other in track and field, along with travel hockey. Mike and I were at the “top of our games” in high school and were often only inches apart at the finish line in the 100 and 200 meters. Despite being each other’s on track nemesis, we became good friend during those years and hand a great respect for each other’s talents. Even though I managed to squeak it out on the track, Mike was a much better hockey player in my eyes.
It saddens me that such a kind and friendly competitor would lose a battle with cancer at such a young age. Although it has been 7 years, I am sure that Mike is greatly missed by family and friends to this day.
Although we never saw one another after high school, our competitions and high school friendship have crossed my mind often over the years. There is no doubt in my mind, in some small way, that our competitive interactions and brief friendship added to my life in a positive way, for which I am grateful to have known Mike and his kind soul.
With warmest regards and deepest sympathies to Mike’s entire family.

  • My very deepest condolences to Mike’s surviving family members. It has been many years since Mike and I chatted...but my memories of the friendship we had during our public school years came flooding back upon my hearing of his passing. I'm not surprised to hear that Mike lived his life as a sports fan - he was one from the very start. The Cleveland Indians were his MLB team back in the day and it was great fun teasing him thru many losing seasons. Playing baseball during long summer days in what could have been called his backyard at the old Talbot Street school came quickly to mind when I thought about Mike. There was a core group of us (Dave and Duncan, Brian and Lefty, Terry B and Larry C) and all the McNear boys seemed to always find something to do (play) to turn summer vacation into a never ending sports outing. But my fondest memories are from being part of the 400 yard (yes yards) relay team that Mike always anchored - with his head tilted back and his chin pointed toward the finish line - how could we not win! God speed, Muff.

  • Brenda and Jodi, Mark & Debbie, Mickey, and families:
We offer you our most sincere sympathies on the passing of this kind soul that you were blessed to have called husband, father, brother...family. His gentle spirit and ready smile will certainly be missed by you and by his many friends. We were honoured to have known him. He will be running on tracks of gold now, and likely enjoying a race or two with his childhood 'racing rival' Dale once again. May you find peace amongst friends, and comfort in your memories. Rest peacefully Mike.
