With his children by his side, Harry Robert Hope of Guilds died unexpectedly but peacefully on Monday, August 15, 2022 at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance just a few weeks shy of celebrating his 88th birthday.  Harry was born September 4, 1934 to Thomas & Elizabeth (Shivas) Hope and was one of nine siblings.  He joins his beloved wife Shirley (April 27, 1936 – August 10, 2000) after 22 years apart.

Loved by their children Lou-Ann & Mike Hodgins of Lucan and Todd & Tracy Hope of Rondeau.

Awesome Papa to his grandchildren:  Amanda & Jordan Gabriel, Justin Hope, Jordan Hope and Arica Hodgins.  Happy great-grandpa to little Eliot Gabriel.

Survived by his youngest sister and brother-in-law Carol & Glen Walters and sister-in-law Jane Hope, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents, his sisters and their husbands Winnifred & Don Allison, Inez & Alex Boyes, Marjorie & Clare Allison, brothers and their wives Tom & Evelyn Hope, Blake & June Hope, Ken & Joyce Hope and brother Doug Hope.

Harry was a well-known and respected plumber and jack of all trades, even continuing to do the odd job right up to the week before his death.  He will be missed by his family, his Thursday afternoon choir practice boys, friends and customers for his wisdom, helpfulness, stubbornness and, of course, his limericks which Todd, Justin and Jordy will do their best to continue.

Visitation for Harry will be held at the Blenheim Community Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 p.m.  A Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday August 19, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.  Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

Condolences

  • To the Hope family: We are so sorry for your loss. Harry had done work for my Mom and Dad at Rondeau for many years. He was kind enough to keep us kids on as customers. He always did a great job for my parents and for the rest of the Ford crew. I have a fond memory of sharing a couple of whiskeys in his kitchen in 2019 when I stopped by to say goodbye and thank him for many years of service to our family. He was a great guy with wit, humour, and a mischievous smile!. Rest in peace, Harry.
    Greg and Dale Ford
  • Our condolences to the Hope Family. Harry helped us numerous times with plumbing emergencies as well as the seasonal turn on/off. Was always smiling and ready to share a story about his motorcycle.

  • To the Hope family, my sympathies on the passing of your father and grandfather. Harry was a good man. He did a lot of work for my parents Don and Helen Stirling back in the day and had developed quite the friendship. I last saw Harry just before the pandemic at the restaurant in New Scotland. He hadn't changed one bit. Sharp as a tack. He will be missed. Let your memories comfort you through this difficult time. - Art

  • Warm condolences to the Hope family on the loss of such a wonderful man. I met Harry when I was a young child due to my family's close friendship with his brother Blake, and also because my Grandma had a nursing home in Guilds. Will always remember 'Oil Can', as my younger brother named him, with a smile on his face. Such a good-hearted character with lots of humour, kindness, and stories to tell. Definitely will be truly missed by many! May he now rest in peace.
    Sincerely, Val Johnston
  • Harry kept the water pumps pumping in Rondeau Park for longer than I've been alive. Nobody knew pluming like he did. I had his phone number memorized. On behalf of the Rondeau Cottagers Association and the hundreds of Rondeau families he's taken great care of for 50+ years -- rest in peace. A truly unforgettable character in the best possible way.
  • Thinking of your family at this time. Always a smile on Harry's face and a laugh to follow. He will be missed.
