Dave Cooper “Coop”

A photo of Dave Cooper “Coop”

It is with great heartache that our family announces the death of Dave, beloved husband of 40 years to Karen Cooper. Admired father to their two children and their partners; Kyle and Karla and Bryan and Jessica (Brown). Sadly, missed by his grandchildren Sunny, Fallyn and Hughy. Predeceased by his parents Jim and Ruth Cooper.  Adored by his siblings, Glen (Carol), Nancy Laverne (Peter), Doug (Lorie), and Perry (Janet), as well as his nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Dave lived life to the fullest. He knew what was important in life, and his world centered around the love he had for his wife Karen, sons Kyle and Bryan and now grandchildren.  Dave was a very proud “Papa”, and loved reading stories to his grandkids.  He enjoyed golfing, the Red Wings, Florida, traveling, boating, coaching hockey and most of all spending time with all the ones he loved most.  He spent over 40+ years teaching at St. Clair College, and was a beloved professor by his many students & staff over the years. Dave’s smile, laugh and humor was always contagious throughout his amazing life.

Our family is devastated by the sudden loss of this extraordinary man, but will continue to keep his life alive in our hearts and memories.

Visitation will take place at the Blenheim Community Funeral Home on Monday May 10, 2021.  ALL VISITATION TIMES HAVE BEEN FILLED.  The Bereavement Authority of Ontario mandates that everyone must wear a face covering in the funeral home.

Friends wishing to remember Dave with a memorial donation are asked to consider the Hospice https://www.chathamkenthospice.com/donate/or charity of their choice.

I recently learned about Dave's passing. My sincere sympathy goes out to the Cooper family. I knew Dave in high school and remember his great laugh and warm personality. We often shared a dance or two at Teen Town Friday night dances. He has left all too soon. His pictures depict a life well lived with his loved ones. Sincerely, Linda Mikus

Dear Karen, I was so saddened to read the news about Dave. I worked at the college from ‘76 to ‘85 and Dave was a very well liked guy, very professional and at the same time a friend to all staff and students. The memorial video shows he lived a good life, but shortened too soon. Take care Karen. Deepest sympathy to you and your boys. Diane Prodenchuk

Dave was on of my favorite teachers in college, he will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family ❤

Saddened to read of Dave’s passing Karen and family. What a loving family he leaves behind. May those beautiful memories you shared over those 40 years together help fill the void in some small way to give you comfort in the years ahead.

I just heard of Dave's passing and you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Dave was one of my first instructors at st Clair and one of my favorites xo

I knew Dave as a co-worker at the College. He was such a wonderful man, always smiling, kind, respected by his students and colleagues. Always up for a good laugh, I remember when he let his students duct tape him to the wall of the cafeteria as a fund raiser. I have a great picture of him hanging a couple feet off the floor! My sincerest sympathies to all and may your memories of Dave bring you peace during the tough days ahead.

Hi Karen and family Just heard of David’s passing. So sorry and please accept our sincere condolences. Mitch &Debby Fedorowski

To Karen and the Cooper Family. So sad to hear about Dave. My condolences to the family. It's been a number of years since we had a visit, but I will always remember the summer at the Ponderosa with Dave, Ed, Pork, and Ron as being one of the best summers of my life. There are so many laughs, stories and great memories that came out of that old farmhouse. Just reading all the condolences being written about Coop, is just a fitting tribute to how many people he left an impression on. I will sit in my garage, blast some 70's rock , shed a few tears and drink a few beers in memory of "Coop". Bruno

I offer my heartfelt condolences to Karen and family. Dave and I spent countless lunch-hours together at Thames Campus, sharing stories (mostly true), political opinions, and of course, some shop talk, relating classroom experiences. We also enjoyed getting together for an occasional beer at the Montreal House, or lunch at Pizza Hut. I always looked forward to our times together. Dave was a true friend, and he added immeasurably to my enjoyment of life at the college. I am very saddened to hear of his passing. Brian

Karen and Family, So sad to hear of Dave's too young passing. Great memories of baseball trips, golfing and his sense of humor. He is sadly missed.

Karen,Bryan, Kyle and family My deepest sympathy at this time of loss of your beloved Patriarch! Everyone is left with precious memories! One of mine began close to 50 years ago at a Kite flying tournament where the saga of “Ma” and “Pa” began. I do believe a few beverages might have taken place. It didn’t matter where we would run into each other whether it be on the street , at the golf course or at Rice Creek . It was always always how ya doing Ma? It even got to the point where his good buddy Peter Cumming would greet my in the same way! Then there was the GRI. I had the privilege of serving the beverages at this very prestigious event! I have some wonderful pictures of all the fun and laughter that was had. If only the infamous GRI jacket could talk and share all the stories! Then their was Rice Creek! Great memories at local watering holes, The Moose or just sitting around in someone’s yard sharing so much laughter and and endless stories. I will cherish my last adventure with “Pa”. I believe it was Super Bowl time at Rice Creek. I had the honor of driving Pa and Brent to the neighborhood party. It was but a five minute drive but it was the most hilarious 5 minutes one could experience! Of all the life experiences that Coop had I know his family was number one! God bless you Cooper family you are in my thoughts and prayers! This Ole Ma is going to miss Pa. 🥲🙏🏻

Dear Karen and family so very sad to see Dave has passed just a wonderful man as you know he will be missed by many people

Such a great life and legacy. Lancely was Perry's closest confidant and by connection the guy who always said 'come on, Duke'. He, like all the 93 Main East'e rs always treated our family like theirs. His golf success was an inspiration and his inclusion of Perry and I on Alice's voyages, with Finney, Porky, Brent, Johnny M at the Surfside, were formative experiences. Gone to soon, but as we all know, "Man plans, God laughs". See you on the 19th, Lance.

What a shock when we heard of Dave's passing. We missed you folks so much last year in Florida. Dave brought humor wherever he went and truly enjoyed every moment of his short life. He will be missed by all who knew him, we keep Dave and the Cooper family in our prayers.

Karen and family, We were shocked and saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. Dave’s life was one well lived. He found joy in his family, friends, and his many pastimes. One of which was boating. I had the pleasure of sharing a sailing adventure with Dave one summer day. We sailed out into Lake Erie and around the point into Rondeau Bay. It was gusty and a bit of a challenge on the way out but the wind dropped off for the return. We had a nice offshore breeze to take us home. The sun set and the stars were bright. Unfortunately it was so dark we couldn’t recognize home port…Surf City. After a few passes and a lot of laughs we beached the boat and walked back on the road. Fortunately we had packed enough emergency supplies. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on through his family and friends and the 100’s of similar stories. All our love Jim and Fran

Karen...We’re so very sorry to hear about Dave. There are just no words to express the shock and sadness we feel. You and your family are in our thoughts and we pray God gives comfort to you all. Love, Bill and Denise

So sorry to read about Coop! Although it’s been many years, I have great memories of golfing and working alongside Dave in the pro shop at Ridgetown Golf Club back in our high school years! One particular memory was playing golf during the day in Mooretown, then driving into London to watch Emerson Lake and Palmer in concert at Wonderland Gardens. Great time! Gone way too soon. Condolences to the entire Cooper family.

Karen. We are so sorry (and ahocked)to hear the news about Dave. He will be missed so much by all of us. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. ❤❤

Deepest condolences to Karen and her sons and families. Although Pat and I have been out of Blenheim since 1979, I have wonderful recollections of Coop starting in golfing at Ridgetown Golf Course when he was a Ridgetown boy. Later when I worked at SRC and was involved with the MRC/DSW program our relationship was consolidated through Porky and the Givers, not to mention the Tiltin Hilton. And during this time he met a wonderful gal named Karen , one of my favourite people from SRC, and they lived happily ever after. It is tragic that Karen has lost her best friend, and the boys a great Dad.. Obviously, Dave has left this world, but he has left it with a wonderful legacy. Even though I have not seen Coop in several years, I can easily recall his easy going personality, his dry sense of humour and even his spoken word. Gone too soon!

Karen & family. So sorry to hear of Dave’s sudden passing. He is certainly going to be missed. Hold tight to your many fond memories. Know that others are sharing his grief as well. RIP Dave

The loss this family has to bear is so painful to anyone who knows them. Our daughter Karla was welcomed into that family with open arms and that big smile when she and Kyle met. Dave was such a role model for Kyle and Bryan and a best friend. Karen, we feel so sad you have lost the love of your life far too early. It was evident how much he adored you. Our sincere sympathies.

Dear Karen and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Dave as a wonderful teacher at St. Clair College. He will be missed.

Dear Cooper Family I can’t begin to imagine how you must be feeling at your tremendous loss of this great man! My heart is hurting for you all. I am SO saddened that Dave’s life has been cut so short - he was larger than life and couldn’t stress enough about the importance of truly LIVING life. Dave started out as my Professor in the DSW program, then became a co-worker and a trusted friend. I’ll never forget late one afternoon when he stopped by my desk and said “Go home, Jan. There’s life outside these four walls! You need to go out and live it. Don’t let this building suck the life out of you!” He was right! As a Professor, he was tough and fair. He was hilariously funny yet passionately serious about the population we would support. In class and in the office, Dave often waxed eloquently about his 2 boys and his amazing wife, who he called “the love of his life”.... and he’d talk about all 3 with such pride, a twinkle in his eyes and smile on his face. He adored you all. He loved his sports teams and would often encourage us to wear a jersey to class “as long as it’s for the right team” :-). Dave was instrumental, along with Casey, at bringing me on board as part of the DSW faculty at St Clair. He mentored me and shared so many valuable tricks of the trade, resources and most of all encouragement. I’ll never forget in our 1st year class, he’d say “My name is Dave Cooper. You can call me Dave, you can call me Mr Cooper, but DON’T call me Coop. Only my friends call me Coop and you’re not my friends.” Message received. The time and place is indelibly etched in my memory of the day and place when he came up beside me (now as faculty), put his arm around my shoulder and said with a smile and twinkle in his eye, “Now, you can call me Coop! We’re friends”. What an honour!! I am the person I am today in part for the influence Dave had in my life. He left his handprint on my heart. He will always be remembered with the utmost respect and love as a man who was passionate about his family and friends and lived life well! Bless him. Praying for you all at this sad time. ~ Janice Smith (former student, co-worker, and honoured friend)

Heather and I were with Brent and Kathy when Porky called with the news of Dave's passing. Dave would often attend the Lincoln's Birthday euchre tournament - and with his warmth and humour, always a hit with the guys. He especially loved to heckle Pork during the 'half time show' and during his rendition of The Great Fire of Duart.
