Carl Russell

A photo of Carl Russell

Carl Russell, much loved husband of Julie (Jackson), father of Craig & Lori and grandfather of Brad (Jacklyn) and Brodie, passed away at home on Wednesday December 13, 2023.  He was born 79 years ago to the late Lorne & Erma Russell, and will be missed by his sister Wendy & Jim Kempster and by Julie’s brother Don & Nancy Jackson.

Carl was an all-round nice guy…being a life-time farmer in Raleigh Township afforded him plenty of opportunity while working the fields, to grow his repertoire of jokes.  He was always armed and ready to add some humour to any occasion and the smile and infectious laugh that accompanied his jokes came from deep within.  He was fun to be around.

In addition to being a farmer, Carl worked in the maintenance department at Southwestern Regional Centre for 20 years.  It was there that his co-workers would learn just how proud he was to be a father and a grandfather.  He spoke about many great adventures in his life that included Craig…they farmed together, hunted together and they camped in the summer and winter (when they would cut evergreen boughs to place on the snow before pitching a tent for the night).  He also spoke with great pride about Brodie and Brad, about spending time at the cabin in the bush when they were young and about watching them grow into the fine men that they are.  He always gave Julie, who he affectionately referred to as “the wife” lots of credit for his happiness and for putting up with him for 56 years!

Carl made no bones about this stage of his life.  His wishes were simple and he wanted to be remembered privately by his family.  As for the rest, if you want to pay him the greatest honour, write a letter to Webster’s Dictionary and ask them to include “Carl Russell” in the definition of “jokester”!  You’ll hear him laugh!

Never let an opportunity pass when you could have made somebody smile!

So sorry to hear about Carol. He was a very nice man and he will be missed greatly. I was thinking of the year he supplied us with horse and wagon for the parade at the bank. Although that was many many years ago, those memories still remain.

    Sincerely,

  • My deepest sympathy to Julie, Craig, and family. I had the greatest pleasure of meeting Carl at SRC.. The friendship and memories we had were second to none. Carl was a special man with so many talents and he made certain that any time spent with him was guaranteed to be fun and memorable, even if you were on the receiving end of his clever pranks. Cherish your many fond memories of a truly great guy.

  • To Julie, Craig, and the Russell Family:

I was saddened to learn the passing of Carl. Carl was such a dear friend to my Dad and Carl even came to see Dad in the hospital despite not being well himself. It meant a lot to my Dad to see Carl and I would never have guessed they would pass away just 7 months a part.

I will never forget when we went to Chatham to see Carl back in the summer of 1994. We stayed at the Wheels Inn and Dad and Carl were so worked up in humour, reliving their time at Ridgetown College, that they woke up the whole apartment floor. That rekindled friendship led to Carl coming up to Huron County for the fall raccoon hunts and it would be a friendship that would persist for more decades.

Carl also joined us in the deer and coyote hunts and he even talked about his time with the Ontario Provincial Police. Carl had a sense of humour second to none and Dad always said that man could write a book series on jokes.

Craig and Julie, I hope you know that Carl was always highly regarded by my family. There might just be a big hunting group being formed in the afterlife based on what we all lost this year alone. Carl lived the best life one can ever be able to live and I hope we will all come to a sense of peace knowing Carl did just that and more. We may have lost Dad and Carl in 2023 but I believe they gained each other again and are now celebrating fond memories again along with their most wishful dreams.

    Deepest condolences,
