In Loving Memory of Susan (Wheeler) O’Brien Attewell
August 31, 1953 – November 9, 2024

Susan (Wheeler) O’Brien Attewell of Erieau passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 71. She leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth, and a free-spirited nature that touched all who knew her. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Sue’s life was built on the unwavering love she had for her family and her passion for life and adventure.

Her four beloved boys were the center of her world: her husband, Craig Attewell, and her two sons, Gabe (Meaghan) O’Brien and Jeff (Andrea) O’Brien, along with her cherished dog, Erie. These boys, along with her three wonderful grandchildren—Addison and Parker O’Brien, and Audrey O’Brien—were her pride and joy. Sue was always eager to share how incredibly proud she was of her family. Sue was never shy about speaking her mind, but more often than not, she would tell anyone who would listen about the immense love she had for those who meant the most to her.

She was born and raised a Cedar Springs’s girl to the late Glen and Elizabeth (Legue) Wheeler where Sue developed deep roots and strong family values that one only hopes for.

You often found Sue with her sisters, the late Glenda (Fred) Wilson, the late Tammy (Barrie) Crozier , and her bestie; her Thelma to Louise, her Hilda to Bet, her sister Mary Kay (Brian) Major. Although a Wheeler girl through and through, she also had 3 brothers who she absolutely adored, who taught her to stand up for herself, stand for what is right, and to never take any crap. The late Clayton (Cathy) Wheeler, Mark (Karen) Wheeler and Terry Wheeler. Family meant the world to her, and she was truly blessed with a loving network of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who brought her immense joy and created cherished memories together.

From a young age, Sue was truly one of a kind—passionate, strong-willed (some might say stubborn), and unwavering in her beliefs. Her heart was overflowing with love, warmth, and empathy, and she was unapologetically herself, embracing life to the fullest. It was this true authenticity that made her such a joy to be around. Her light shone bright and warm, a light she never dimmed for anyone—and if you didn’t like it, well, she’d “kindly” suggest you look elsewhere. Always ready for adventure, Sue created countless memories and forged strong lasting friendships with people from all walks of life, always welcoming them around her table with open arms. These friendships were a testament to the genuine, vibrant, free-spirited soul she was, and they lasted a lifetime.

Sue’s love for Erieau went beyond being just a place to live—it was her sanctuary. From her porch, with Craig by her side and a very full glass (a Sue pour) of Pinot Gris in hand, she’d gaze out over the water, watching the boaters and the birds; savoring the tranquil beauty of the bay. This deep affection for the village was something she passed down to her children and grandchildren. She cherished spending her days watching them swim and sail, often from the comfort of her golf cart with Craig at her side. In these moments, surrounded by her loved ones, Sue was truly in her happy place. A “keeper” of community stories, she was always in the know, ready to share a laugh, a story, and a cold drink with everyone she met. Her care for others knew no bounds, and her ability to make everyone feel seen and valued was a gift she shared freely.

Although Sue’s physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit will live on, shining brightly through her beloved boys, family, and friends. Her legacy will be felt in every cherished moment, every shared laugh, every full to the brim glass of white and in the countless ways she touched our lives. She was truly one of a kind—perfectly imperfect, uniquely Sue—and she will be deeply missed.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to EMS, the Erieau Fire Department and all the friends and family for the support. Donations in memory of Sue may be made to the Erieau Yacht Club-Jr. Sailing Program, the Erieau Fire Department, or St. Paul’s Anglican Church- which would be greatly appreciated.

Sue will be having her final hurrah (celebration of life) on Thursday, November 28th, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Legion in Blenheim. The family invites you to join them in raising a glass to honor an incredible woman and the amazing life she lived..

My dearest SoozQ … I am so sad, sorry and very tearful to know I won’t be greeted with a big hug and a ‘hey John’ every time I am in the Eau! From playing cards into the wee hours on John Street in our early 20’s, to bemoaning the inadequacies of our social programs for kids, watching Lake Erie threaten our homes , telling countless stories about our kids and how amazing grandparenting is and finding our true loves in this life, we’ve had an amazing friendship! Craig, Gabe , Jeff and families, please know my condolences are heartfelt. My ‘lady of the lake’ Will live on forever in our hearts 💕

I met Sue almost 40 years ago when she became the Director of the Growing Together Family Resource Centre, the child care program my daughters attended. As I arrived I could smell fresh coffee brewing and I thought I’m going to like this lady. She did not disappoint creating an environment for the children, staff and families that was warm, conducive to learning, and ever so much fun. Sue was ably assisted by Gabe, her ever charming little boy. Over the years Sue and I worked together in different settings and I had an opportunity to experience first hand her steadfast commitment to early childhood education and the importance of quality in the delivery of services. I also remember a very stylish lady always with the edgiest hair do. More than anything though she loved her boys. For all of you who love her I would like to extend my sincerest sympathy and hope that your memories of her will sustain you now and into the future.
