DE BROUWER, Peter Cyrillus

1934 – 2020

Peter deBrouwer passed away peacefully at age 86, on Thursday October 22nd, 2020.

Born in Nuenen, The Netherlands on February 9, 1934, Peter was one of 11 children of the late Lambert and Elizabeth (Van Eerd) de Brouwer.  For over 60 years he was a loving and steadfast husband to Anne Berendsen, the girl he first kissed in 1953 on a snowy New Year’s Eve in Nuenen. Together they worked side by side to build a family, a farm business, and a wide circle of meaningful friends.

He was the proud father of Ben (Patricia), Marianne (Brant), Allen (Marja) and Melissa (Stephen).

A good humoured and fun-loving Opa, he will be forever missed by his grandchildren Cayley, Athena (Curtis), Weston (2004), Charlotte (David), Raina (Jason), Evan, Sawyer (Natasha), Sam, Andrew (Erika), James (Sally) and great grandchildren Claire, Nathan, and Kylie.

Peter will be dearly missed by his surviving brothers and sisters as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.

Dad had little formal education, yet had no trouble demonstrating his intelligence. He read widely, expressed his opinions honestly and enjoyed debate. He knew a lot about a lot.  He was always right, unless proven wrong (which rarely happened).

Dad was mostly a man of easy-going charm, but at times he demonstrated a stubbornness that could surely impress a mule.

He was probably the world’s least known champion coach: riding coach, hockey coach, fishing coach, driving coach, poker coach, and life coach.  You name it, Dad coached it.

He understood risk and reward ratios, and seized opportunities.  He was ambitious and hardworking, but he was not an early riser.

Dad was not interested in having a house pet, but was a bred-in-the bone animal lover.  The pasture on the farm was shared by donkeys, ponies, horses, and sheep.  If you drove into the yard you were usually greeted by a beagle or mutt of some sort, a proud peacock and a couple of peahens.  In Morpeth, he delighted in the various fowl he lured to his pond: mallard ducks, snow geese, and wild swans.

He showed a thoughtful generosity to friends and others in need, but there were also more than a few occasions when he confirmed the Dutch reputation for stinginess.

Anthropologists suggest our contradictions make us human.  By this measure, Dad was an ordinary man. But to us, he was extraordinary.

Dad, you and mom created a very good life for your four children.  You gave and received love openly and generously and we are grateful. We will carry your love forward.

Due to Covid requirements, visitation will be held privately by invitation and appointment on Monday October 26th at Blenheim Community Funeral Home.

A private Mass will be held on Tuesday October 27th with interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Blenheim.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chatham-Kent Hospice are appreciated.  https://www.chathamkenthospice.com/donate/

Very sorry for your loss. Pete was quite the character he will surely be missed but his presence will live on. They will surely be playing some poker! The Lenders Family

I have great memories of Uncle Pete. I spent a lot of time in Blenheim e as a kid. I loved how Uncle Pete was so excited about his ponies and horses. He was so proud of his 4 legged family. And yes...it was a requirement to be part of the duties of cleaning the barn, feeding the animals, and making sure the horses were groomed... "properly"! I have a scar on my elbow from riding one of the ponies who didn't know how to navigate a culvert and so I was propelled in the air to the other side of the culvert. After a trip to the hospital to get stitches, Uncle Pete was adamant that I needed to get right back on the pony the next day. And I did! I also remember Uncle Pete being loud as a kid. Just give him a deck of cards, a cigar and a few drinks and ...well...the volume goes up!! I recall hearing about Uncle Pete being stubborn and I didn't believe it...but then I saw it in action when I was at your place...when Uncle Pete says NO there is absolutely no changing his mind. No negotiation, no bribing...no matter what you did or said to try to change his mind...the answer was NO! I was living with you Uncle Pete and Aunt Anne, for a fall semester, while I was doing a teacher's college placement at Blenheim District High School. I am so grateful to you both for your generosity. That's also the time when Uncle Pete and Ben were in Oklahoma City with Lady in Grey and Ben won the championship. What an exciting timte. Uncle Pete was SO PROUD, excited, and tired when he returned. Uncle Pete was devastated with the loss of Weston. He described a special bond with Weston. I remember at the visitation that Uncle Pete would just shake his head with disbelief that his grandson had predeceased him..."It shouldn't be this way..." he said..."but it is and we just have to deal with it!" I am imagining Uncle Pete and Weston 4 wheeling together again. Thank you Uncle Pete...for touching my life and the lives of those who have known you. You lived a full life!

My deepest sympathies to everyone. Oom Pete lived a beautiful life. I’ll always remember the huge smile on his face and the light in his eyes. Our thoughts are with you all.

Mrs. DeBrouwer, My sincerest condolences on the loss of Pete. I was lucky to be around Pete occasionally when he would come to visit my Dad. He was always so kind to include me in the conversations. He was a good friend my Dad needed.

Your Dad/Opa was so good to my Dad, Once he was in Blenheim Community Village, he would visit him 2 or 3 times a week, always same time and Dad always looked forward to seeing him. He had a special place in my heart for being the friend that Dad needed. He was a special man - I'm sure you all know that!! My sincerest condolences. Kellie and Tim
