James Leon VanNeck, born June 21,1935 passed away peacefully on July 27, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents Leon VanNeck (2001) and Irene VanNeck (nee Nourse)(2000). He is survived by his brother Gary (Charlotte) VanNeck and sister Barb (Duncan) O’Brien, his wife Joan VanNeck (nee St. Peter), his two sons Chris (Jennifer) VanNeck and Darren (Cathy) VanNeck and many nieces and nephews. But who he will miss the most are his grandchildren, his pride and joys, Ryleigh, Hayden, Quin, Kees, Noah and Blake.

Jim (aka Diamond Jim) started working on the Dyke Road family farm and then with his Dad, started Leon VanNeck and Son Ltd, a small construction company to keep them busy in the wintertime. With a strong work ethic and a golden rule business practice, before they knew it, they went from building barns to custom homes to multimillion dollar commercial jobs. Including such local structures as the Chatham Women’s Center (also sat on the board), Residence on the Thames (where he ultimately spent the last five years of his life), the Blenheim Fire Hall, Blenheim Retirement Village and one of his favourites, the Blenheim Memorial Arena.

Family was most important with Jim, but when not with them, his community was next. He was a long time member of the Shriners, the Golden Acres Curling Club (past president), Blades Executive member and also a founding member of the Morpeth Oldtimers. When not supporting his two sons many endeavours he enjoyed many years of sailing.

The family cannot thank the staff of Riverview Gardens and Residence on the Thames enough for their above and beyond the call of duty care for Dad.

As per his wishes, there will a private family service in Blenheim on Saturday. We ask that if you wish to make a donation in his honour, that you support his favourite charity, the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

So sorry for your loss. We enjoyed Jim's acquaintance, both through work and play (curling and sailing). Our prayers are with you. Sincerely, Jerry & Jean De Bruyn

Darren & Cathy, Chris & Jennifer, Joan, and family, please accept our sincere condolences on your loss. We were so sad to hear of Jim's passing. He was an outstanding Father and Grandfather with a tremendous sense of humour. May you all take comfort in the good times you shared and the memories you will carry with you forever. Craig, Patti, Meghan, Brendan, and Brett

Aunt Joan, Chris, Darren and families ... I asked Noeline to pass on hugs to all of you. Uncle Jim was a kind man. I remember many Sunday afternoons when I wasn't too old, when I went home from church with you guys (yes, boys ...every now and then your mom wanted a girl around the house for a few hours :-) and had to spend at least a bit of time with Jim watching sailing on tv ...if he wasn't out on a boat himself. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. Much love!

Sincere condolences to all the VanNecks. Jim was a great guy & my memories of times spent with he & Joan were always so much fun. Chris & Darren were just toddlers, & as we got busy with our lives, our contacts seemed to get limited to 2 or 3 times a year. However, our friendship remained. The last time I talked with Jim, the topic of conversation was his grandchildren mostly, he was certainly a proud Grandpa. It was evident the time he was able to spend with them was the highlight of his life. My thoughts & prayers go out to all of you during this sad time. Verona

Joan, Chris, Darren and family, So sorry to hear about Jim. Thinking of you at this difficult time. Don and Carol Boylan,Jennifer,Janice and Angela Dee Wagner

Our sympathy, Joan, to you and your family.

Chris, Darren and family, So sorry for the loss of your father. A real testament to his character is the kind, driven, family focused men you have both become. Thinking of you. Siobhain and Rob Bondy

Joan, so sorry to hear of your loss

so very sorry for your loss.

Some of my most profound memories as a young man include Jim. Was there a summer weekend in my late teens or early 20's that didn't include hanging out on Incision with Jim, Darren and the Incision crew? Will miss his smile, his wisdom and his laugh. Great memories.

We wish to express our sympathy to you, Joan and all your family. Jim was a great team player when we all played for the Morpeth teams. We enjoyed many good times at hockey parties. May all the good times and happy memories comfort you in these sad times.

Chris, Darren, Joan and families, So sorry to hear of your loss. I have many fond memories of time spent with your dad, and your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Joan and family My deepest sympathy to you. Jim is at peace after a long road. God bless all. Sincerely Barbara Rose

Sending our sympathy to the VanNeck family. We have been friends with Jim & Joan for many years, started with curling in Blenheim; then sailing. Lee would put a couple beers in his pockets and go to the residence and they would talk about sailing; think Jim enjoyed their time together and refreshments.

My deepest sympathies for your loss Joan, Chris, Darren and families. Also miss you as neighbours here in Erie Beach. Rose and son Jeff Clayton

Thinking of you all. From playing hockey with Morpeth Old Timers to being our Erie Beach neighbour, we marvel at all the things Jim did for the community of Blenheim. May you find comfort in all your memories. Sincerely, Ted and Brenda.

Curled with Jim for number of years. A great competitor and a great person. He will be missed

Much love to the VanNeck family at this time. Jim was a good man, and was always a huge support and friend to the Burk family. Noeline, James, Cora and Leah

Joan, Chris, Darren & families......we are thinking of you during this difficult time. Our condolences to the whole family. Sincerely, Paul, Jil, Andrew & Eric Scott
